When is Native American Heritage Day 2024?

What is Native American Heritage Day?

Native American Heritage Day is a time to honor the rich cultural legacy and traditions of the many Native American communities. It is a day of celebration that highlights their vibrant history, while also acknowledging the painful and violent struggles they’ve faced throughout history. The injustices endured by Native Americans at the hands of colonizers are a significant part of this reflection, serving as a reminder of the need for understanding and reparations. This day is a centerpiece of Native American Heritage Month, dedicated to recognizing the history, culture, and contributions of Native peoples.

When is Native American Heritage Day 2024?

In 2024, Native American Heritage Day will be observed on Friday, November 29th, following Thanksgiving. It’s an annual celebration that takes place the day after Thanksgiving each year.

What is the History of Native American Heritage Day?

The roots of Native American Heritage Day trace back to 1912, when Dr. Arthur C. Parker of the Seneca Nation began advocating for greater recognition of Native American communities. Between 1912 and 1915, he actively campaigned for a National Native American Heritage Day, seeking to ensure Native American people received the acknowledgment they deserved.

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush officially designated the day after Thanksgiving as American Indian Heritage Day, thanks to legislation introduced by Congressman Joe Baca. November 28th was formally recognized as a day to celebrate the culture, history, and achievements of Native peoples. The initiative was backed by 184 federally recognized Native American tribes.

Native American Heritage Day encourages all Americans to recognize and appreciate Native cultures in a meaningful way. Educational institutions are encouraged to enhance awareness of Native traditions, practices, and contributions, while the day offers Native American communities a platform to share their stories and lead conversations about their heritage.
